Description

Create colorful and eco-friendly bioplastic suncatchers to brighten your home with a fun DIY project.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
  • Natural or food-safe coloring
  • Optional fine glitter
  • Flower petals or small pieces of tissue paper
  • A non-stick surface (like silicone baking mats or parchment paper)
  • String or suction hook for hanging
  • Hole punch

Instructions

  1. Start by measuring out 1/2 cup of water and pouring it into a medium-sized saucepan.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin to the saucepan. Stir the mixture well until all the dry ingredients are completely combined and smooth.
  3. Place the saucepan on the stove over medium-low heat. Continue stirring the mixture for about 3 to 5 minutes, until it begins to thicken. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning, and remove it from the heat once you see a gel-like consistency.
  4. Now, divide the thickened gel into several small bowls. Add natural or food-safe coloring to each bowl to create your desired colors. Mix well until you achieve an even color throughout the gel.
  5. Take the colored gels and pour them onto the non-stick surface, creating fun swirls and patterns. Feel free to add flower petals, fine glitter, or small pieces of tissue paper for extra decorations.
  6. Allow the suncatchers to dry completely for 24 to 48 hours. If you want to ensure even drying, flip them halfway through the drying time.
  7. Once fully dried, use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each suncatcher. Finally, thread a piece of string through the hole or attach a suction hook for easy hanging. Your beautiful bioplastic suncatchers are now ready to brighten up your space!

Notes

  • Make sure to use natural or food-safe coloring to keep the suncatchers safe for indoor use.
  • Experiment with different designs by varying the colors and decorations added to the gels.
  • Ensure good ventilation while heating the mixture to avoid any strong odors.
