Description

A fun and creative DIY project for making colorful bioplastic suncatchers using simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons glycerin (available at craft stores)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Wax paper or silicone baking mats
  • Scissors
  • Cookie cutters (optional)
  • String or fishing line for hanging

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, mix the cornstarch, water, and glycerin, stirring until thoroughly combined.
  2. Heat the Mixture: Over low to medium heat, continuously stir the mixture. It will start to thicken and eventually become a gel-like consistency.
  3. Add Color: Once the mixture thickens, remove it from heat. Divide into separate bowls and add food coloring to each for different colors.
  4. Prepare Your Surface: Lay out wax paper or silicone baking mats on a flat, clean surface.
  5. Shape the Suncatchers: Pour spoonfuls of the colored mixture onto the wax paper, spreading them out to form desired shapes. Use cookie cutters for more defined designs if desired.
  6. Create Hanging Holes: Use a straw or a toothpick to poke a hole at the top of each suncatcher for string later.
  7. Cure the Suncatchers: Allow the suncatchers to dry for at least 10 minutes or until they harden. For thicker designs, longer curing may be necessary.
  8. Cut and Finish: After they are dry, gently peel off the wax paper. If necessary, trim the edges for cleaner shapes.
  9. Add String: Cut a length of string or fishing line and thread it through the hole at the top of each suncatcher for hanging.
