Description

Indulge in a rich and creamy Black Forest Christmas Trifle featuring layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, cherries, and vanilla pudding.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (prepared and cooled) or 1 homemade chocolate cake
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cherries, pitted (canned in syrup or fresh)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice or syrup
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bake the chocolate cake according to package instructions or your preferred homemade method. Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.
  2. Cut the cooled chocolate cake into approximately 2.5 cm cubes to facilitate layering.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  4. If using canned cherries, drain and reserve juice. If using fresh cherries, pit and slice as needed. In a small bowl, mix cherries with cherry juice or syrup and allow them to marinate.
  5. In a trifle dish or individual glasses, arrange a single layer of cake cubes at the base, pressing gently for firmness.
  6. Spread an even layer of vanilla pudding over the cake base, smoothing the surface with a spoon.
  7. Spoon a layer of marinated cherries with some juice evenly over the pudding.
  8. Layer whipped cream over the cherries, smoothing gently with a spatula.
  9. Continue layering cake cubes, pudding, cherries, and whipped cream until the dish is filled, ensuring the final layer is whipped cream.
  10. Sprinkle chocolate shavings and cocoa powder over the top layer. Optionally, add a few whole cherries for decoration. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight to set and meld flavors before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade chocolate cake.
  • Ensure the whipped cream is thick enough to hold its shape.
  • Can be prepared a day in advance for better flavor melding.
