Description
Create colorful and fun butterflies using chromatography techniques with simple materials like coffee filters and washable markers.
Ingredients
- White coffee filters
- Washable markers (water-based, bright colors)
- Spray bottle or pipettes with water
- Pipe cleaners (for butterfly bodies and antennae)
- Tray or baking sheet (to contain water)
- Optional: googly eyes for decoration
Instructions
- Gather Your Materials: Collect all materials and set out your workspace on a tray for easy cleanup.
- Color the Coffee Filters: Flatten a coffee filter and use washable markers to draw patterns in bright colors, covering about ⅓ of the filter.
- Apply Water for Chromatography: Lightly mist the filter with water to spread the marker ink and create blended patterns. Let it dry for 1–2 hours.
- Shape the Butterfly Wings: Once dry, fold and accordion-fold the coffee filter, securing the center with a pipe cleaner.
- Add Details and Display: Optionally add googly eyes for decoration and hang or display the butterflies as desired.
Notes
- Work on a tray or baking sheet to catch any drips.
- Use paper towels for easy cleanup.
- Scissors can be used to trim the pipe cleaners as needed.
