Description
Create beautiful Crayon Star Sun Catchers with this easy craft project, perfect for adding a splash of color to your decor!
Ingredients
- Broken crayons
- Star shaped silicone molds or metal cookie cutters
- Aluminum foil
- Mini muffin tin
- Parchment paper
- Oven or toaster oven preheated to 275°F (135°C)
- Jewelry wire or invisible fishing line for hanging
- Craft knife
- Oven mitts
- Optional extras: Chunky glitter, iridescent mica powder
Instructions
- Prepare the Crayons: Start by shaving or chopping the broken crayons into small pieces. Keep different colors separate if you want to create controlled designs.
- Fill the Molds: Choose your mold—either star-shaped silicone molds or metal cookie cutters placed on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. For an ombré effect, layer the crayon pieces from darkest to lightest. If you prefer a galaxy look, use a black crayon as the base and sprinkle some neon colored flecks on top. You can shape aluminum foil around the cookie cutters to create walls for added depth.
- Melt the Crayons: Carefully place the baking sheet in the preheated oven or toaster oven. Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes, or until you see that the wax has melted and become glossy. Avoid stirring the melted wax.
- Add Hanging Loops: After removing the molds from the oven and letting them cool slightly (but while still soft), quickly press pieces of jewelry wire or loops of invisible fishing line into the melted wax for hanging.
- Cool & Remove: To make removal easier, place the molds in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Once they are sufficiently chilled, gently remove the sun catchers from the molds. You can use a soft cloth to buff any rough edges.
- Display Your Sun Catchers: Find a sunny window where you can hang your finished creations and enjoy the beautiful colors glowing as sunlight passes through.
Notes
- If you want to add a little sparkle, consider mixing in some chunky glitter or iridescent mica powder before the crayons completely cool.
- For additional depth, try experimenting with different layers of color, creating various patterns, or using multiple molds at once for a colorful display.
