Description

Create beautiful and vibrant DIY bioplastic suncatchers to brighten your home with this easy-to-follow recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin powder
  • Natural or food-safe colorants (like food coloring, beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, etc.)
  • Optional: fine glitter, dried flower petals, or small bits of tissue paper
  • A non-stick surface (plastic sheet, silicone mat, or parchment paper)
  • Hole punch
  • String or a suction hook for hanging

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, mix together the water, cornstarch, vinegar, and gelatin. Stir well until everything is smooth and clump-free.
  2. Set the saucepan over low to medium heat. Keep stirring continuously as the mixture transforms into a lovely glossy gel, which should take about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Once your mixture has thickened beautifully, take it off the heat. If you’re feeling colorful, divide the warm mix into several bowls now!
  4. Add your favorite natural colorants and mix until you get a vibrant blend.
  5. Pour the colorful mixtures onto your non-stick surface, spreading them out into thin, even layers.
  6. Let your creativity shine! Use toothpicks to create fun patterns, or add a sprinkle of glitter and press in flower petals for an enchanting touch!
  7. Allow the suncatchers to air dry for 24-48 hours. If they seem a bit thick, flip them halfway through drying to ensure they firm up nicely.
  8. When they’re dry and slightly flexible, carefully peel them off the surface. Punch a hole at the top of each suncatcher.
  9. Thread some string through the hole, and hang your beautiful creations in a sunny window to brighten up your space!

Notes

  • Experiment with different color combinations and patterns to create unique designs for your suncatchers.
  • For added durability, seal the finished suncatchers with a clear, non-toxic sealant after they are dry.
