Description

A nostalgic recipe for classic butter mints that evoke fond memories and make perfect gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 4 cups Powdered Sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons Heavy Cream or Half-and-Half
  • 1 teaspoon Peppermint Extract
  • 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • Food Coloring (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter and a pinch of salt. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add Sugar Gradually: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed initially, then increase the speed once blended.
  3. Mix in Cream and Flavoring: Pour in the heavy cream and peppermint extract and mix until just combined.
  4. Finish the Dough: Add remaining powdered sugar until you achieve a soft but pliable dough.
  5. Color It (If Desired): Dust a surface with powdered sugar and knead in food coloring if you wish.
  6. Shape the Mints: Roll small pieces of dough into thin ropes, then cut into bite-sized pieces.
  7. Drying Time: Arrange the shaped mints on a parchment-lined baking sheet, allowing to air dry for 12-24 hours.

Notes

Store the mints in an airtight container for up to three weeks. They can also be refrigerated or frozen for longer storage.
