Description

Indulge in this rich and flavorful Chicago style deep dish pizza featuring a buttery crust, gooey mozzarella, and hearty toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (cooked and crumbled)
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 2 cups chunky tomato sauce

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, and salt.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Add the melted butter and yeast mixture into the flour mixture. Stir until it forms a cohesive dough.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer your dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes.
  5. Let the dough rise: Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven: Preheat to 475°F (245°C).
  7. Shape the dough: Once risen, roll it out into a circle that fits your greased cast iron skillet.
  8. Assemble the layers: Layer 1 cup of mozzarella on the bottom, followed by the sausage and pepperoni.
  9. Top with sauce: Pour chunky tomato sauce evenly over the toppings.
  10. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  11. Cool and serve: Let cool for a few minutes, then slice and enjoy.

Notes

For a healthier crust, use whole wheat flour. You can customize toppings to your liking.
