Description

Create your own colorful bouncy balls with this fun science activity perfect for a rainy day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp borax powder
  • 2 tbsp white school glue
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • Food colouring or gel dye (rainbow colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • Small plastic cups or bowls for mixing
  • Wooden sticks or plastic spoons

Instructions

  1. Make the Activator: In a small cup, combine the 1/2 cup of warm water with the 1 tablespoon of borax powder. Stir vigorously until the borax is completely dissolved. Set aside.
  2. Create the Colour Base: In a separate cup, add 1 tablespoon of white school glue. Choose your first colour and add 1-2 drops of food colouring. Sprinkle the 1 tablespoon of cornstarch over the top but do not stir yet.
  3. The Magic Moment: Pour 1/2 tablespoon of your prepared borax solution into the cup with the glue and cornstarch. Stir quickly until it begins to clump and solidify.
  4. Knead & Shape: Once cool enough to handle, take the mixture out and knead it in your palm for 1-2 minutes until it becomes a smooth, pliable ball.
  5. Repeat the Rainbow: Clean your cup and repeat steps 2-4 for additional colours. For a marbled effect, combine small pieces of different coloured dough.

Notes

  • Supervise Always: Requires adult supervision, especially with borax.
  • Sticky Situation: If too sticky, dip fingers in water or borax solution.
  • Drying Out: Let balls sit on a paper towel for 10-15 minutes to firm up.
  • Storage: Keep in a zip-top bag or sealed container to retain bounce.
