- 1 standard ice cube tray (12–14 compartments)
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup water (plus a little extra if needed)
- Food coloring – assorted colors (optional)
- Toothpicks or skewers – for color mixing
- Optional: vinegar – for fizzy chemical reaction
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, add 2 cups of baking soda to 1 cup of water and stir thoroughly.
- Add 2–3 drops of different food coloring into each slot of the ice tray and swirl gently with a toothpick or skewer.
- Slowly pour the baking soda solution into each tray compartment, filling them nearly to the top.
- Place the tray flat in the freezer and let it sit overnight (8–12 hours) to freeze completely.
- Carefully remove the cubes from the tray and hold them up to the light to observe the crystal patterns.
- Drop a few frozen cubes into a bowl of warm vinegar to observe the fizzing reaction.
