Description

Create colorful ice crystals with the Magic Rainbow Ice DIY Science Kit for Kids, a fun and educational activity that combines science with creativity.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard ice cube tray (1214 compartments)
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup water (plus a little extra if needed)
  • Food coloring – assorted colors (optional)
  • Toothpicks or skewers – for color mixing
  • Optional: vinegar – for fizzy chemical reaction

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, add 2 cups of baking soda to 1 cup of water and stir thoroughly.
  2. Add 2–3 drops of different food coloring into each slot of the ice tray and swirl gently with a toothpick or skewer.
  3. Slowly pour the baking soda solution into each tray compartment, filling them nearly to the top.
  4. Place the tray flat in the freezer and let it sit overnight (8–12 hours) to freeze completely.
  5. Carefully remove the cubes from the tray and hold them up to the light to observe the crystal patterns.
  6. Drop a few frozen cubes into a bowl of warm vinegar to observe the fizzing reaction.

Notes

  • All ingredients are non-toxic and safe for kids to handle under adult supervision.
  • Allowing the solution to freeze slowly can enhance the clarity of the ice crystals.
  • Encourage kids to describe and predict the reactions they observe.
