Description

Create beautiful and captivating lanterns using mason jars that will enhance your home decor and provide a cozy ambiance.

Ingredients

  • Mason jars (any size)
  • Tea light candles (real or LED)
  • Twine, ribbon, or wire (for handles or decoration)
  • Tissue paper
  • Glass paint or frosted spray (for coloring)
  • Mod Podge or white glue (if using tissue paper)
  • Paintbrush or sponge brush
  • Scissors
  • Optional: glitter, lace, pressed flowers, or stencils

Instructions

  1. Clean and dry your mason jars thoroughly to ensure there is no dust or residue that could affect your project.
  2. Decide on your lantern style:
    • Tissue Paper Lanterns: Tear or cut tissue paper into shapes. Using a paintbrush, coat the outer surface of the jar with Mod Podge. Press the tissue paper pieces onto the jar, covering them completely. Once done, seal the tissue paper by brushing another layer of Mod Podge over the top.
    • Painted Lanterns: Use glass paint or frosted spray to create designs directly on the mason jar. For stencils, secure them on the jar and apply paint over the stencil. Remove the stencil carefully once the paint is dry.
    • Rustic Lanterns: For a farmhouse touch, wrap twine, lace, or ribbon around the top neck of the mason jar. You can secure it with a small knot or a dab of glue.
  3. Place a tea light candle (real or LED) inside each jar. If using real candles, ensure the jar is heat resistant and monitor it closely.
  4. (Optional) If you want to hang your lanterns, wrap wire securely around the jar’s neck to create a handle. Make sure the wire is sturdy enough to hold the jar.
  5. Display your glowing lanterns indoors or outdoors for instant ambiance. Consider placing them on tables, hanging them from tree branches, or lining your porch.

Notes

  • Experiment with different colors and patterns using various types of tissue paper or paint to create unique effects on your lanterns.
  • If you want to create a more festive atmosphere, consider adding a sprinkle of glitter or using holiday-themed stencils for seasonal decorations.
