Description

Create beautiful suncatchers using melted blue crayons for a colorful touch to your home.

Ingredients

  • Blue crayons (peeled & sorted into light/dark shades)
  • Pencil sharpener or cheese grater
  • Wax paper
  • Iron (on low heat)
  • Parchment paper or old towel
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch & ribbon (for hanging)
  • Optional: Glitter, cookie cutters

Instructions

  1. Start by peeling the blue crayons and sorting them into light and dark shades. This will help create a beautiful ombre effect when combined.
  2. Using a pencil sharpener or cheese grater, shave the crayons into tiny pieces. Mix the light and dark shades together for a more dynamic look.
  3. Once the crayon shavings are ready, lay out a sheet of wax paper on your work surface. Sprinkle the shavings evenly across the wax paper.
  4. Place a second sheet of wax paper on top of the crayon shavings.
  5. Cover the top layer of wax paper with a piece of parchment paper or an old towel to protect your iron and surfaces.
  6. Carefully turn on the iron to a low heat setting. Gently press down on the parchment paper over the wax paper for 3-5 seconds. This will melt the crayon shavings together. Be sure to have an adult handle this step!
  7. After a few seconds, lift the iron and allow the wax paper to cool. Once cool to the touch, you can cut out shapes using scissors. Consider using cookie cutters to create fun designs like stars, fish, or clouds.
  8. After cutting out your shapes, use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each suncatcher.
  9. Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and tie it to create a loop for hanging.
  10. Finally, tape your suncatchers to sunny windows to enjoy the colorful light they create!

Notes

  • For a touch of sparkle, add glitter to the crayon shavings before ironing.
  • If you don’t have an iron, you can use a hair dryer on high heat to melt the crayon shavings, just ensure to follow the same layering steps.
