Instructions
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly, removing all wax residue (dip in hot water briefly, then dry completely).
- Insert sticks firmly into the top of each apple.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water.
- Heat over medium-high without stirring until it reaches 300°F (150°C) on a candy thermometer (hard crack stage).
- Once at temperature, remove from heat and carefully stir in black gel food coloring until smooth and glossy.
- Working quickly, dip each apple into the candy mixture, twirling to coat evenly.
- Let excess drip off, then place on the parchment to harden completely (about 10 minutes).
- Mix gold dust with a touch of vodka or extract to create a paintable paste.
