Description
Unleash a miniature, mesmerizing thunderstorm right on your countertop with this stunning science experiment, pure magic in a jar.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 clear glass jar with a tight-fitting lid (16 oz or larger)
- Vegetable oil (enough to fill 2/3 of the jar)
- Water
- Blue or white food coloring
- Alka-Seltzer tablets (or any effervescent antacid tablets)
- Glow-in-the-dark paint or powder (optional)
- A small flashlight or LED light (optional)
Instructions
- Pour the vegetable oil into your jar, filling it about two-thirds of the way.
- Slowly and carefully pour water into the jar until it is almost full, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
- Add 3-4 drops of blue or white food coloring.
- For a mystical effect, stir a small spoonful of glow-in-the-dark paint or powder into the water layer.
- Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into 4-6 pieces and drop one piece into the jar, then quickly seal the lid tightly.
- Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight through the jar from the side or bottom to illuminate the reaction.
- When the bubbling slows, add another piece of tablet to keep the mystical energy flowing!
Notes
- The magic works because the oil and water have different densities and do not mix.
- Use smaller pieces of tablet to create a longer, more controlled storm.
- Try purple food coloring for a truly mystical vibe.
- Ensure the lid is on tight to contain your energetic storm.
