Description
A craft activity to create lasting memories by making salt-dough handprints.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup warm water
- Mixing bowl and spoon
- Rolling pin
- Baking sheet + parchment paper
- Drinking straw (for making a hanging hole, optional)
- Acrylic paints & paintbrushes
- Clear acrylic spray or Mod Podge (for sealing)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Slowly add warm water while stirring until a dough forms. Knead until smooth.
- Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thick on parchment paper.
- Have your child press their hand firmly into the dough to leave a deep impression. Optional: use a straw to poke a small hole at the top if you want to hang it as an ornament.
- Place on a baking sheet and bake at 200°F (93°C) for 2–3 hours until fully hardened. (Flip halfway if needed.) Let cool completely.
- Paint the handprint with acrylic paint — metallics, pastels, or bright colors work beautifully. Let dry.
- Spray with clear acrylic sealant or brush on Mod Podge to preserve. Hang with ribbon or display on a shelf.
Notes
- Make sure to knead the dough until it is smooth for best results.
- Experiment with different colors and patterns when painting.
- Allow ample time for the handprint to cool and dry completely before sealing.
