Description

A fun and creative salt painting activity for kids that encourages artistic expression and experimentation with colors and textures.

Ingredients

  • Black or dark-colored cardstock or heavy paper
  • White school glue (PVA glue)
  • Table salt (regular granulated salt)
  • Watercolor paints or liquid food coloring
  • Paintbrushes or pipettes
  • Small cups or palette for colors
  • Paper towels for cleanup

Instructions

  1. Set up your workspace by covering the surface with paper towels or a plastic tablecloth to protect it from spills and mess.
  2. Use the white glue to draw a design on the cardstock or heavy paper; this could be anything from simple shapes to more intricate patterns.
  3. Generously sprinkle salt over the glue lines. Make sure the glue is completely covered. Gently shake off the excess salt, leaving the salt stuck to the glue.
  4. In small cups, mix your watercolor paints or liquid food coloring with a little bit of water to create vibrant colors.
  5. Dip a paintbrush or pipette into your chosen color and carefully touch it to the salty lines on your paper. Watch as the color spreads and interacts with the salt, creating beautiful patterns.
  6. Repeat this process with different colors, filling in your design and allowing the colors to blend for unique effects.
  7. Once you’re satisfied with your artwork, allow it to air-dry completely. This may take several hours or overnight.
  8. Once dry, your piece will have a textured, sparkly finish that is perfect for framing or gifting.

Notes

  • To make the colors pop even more, use dark paper as your base.
  • Get creative by painting themed projects, such as seasonal designs or favorite animals.
  • You can also add a sprinkle of glitter over the wet paint for an extra touch of sparkle.
