Description

Create stunning underwater fireworks visuals with this fun and easy jar project that combines colors and oil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 wide-mouth clear glass jar or vase (32 oz works great)
  • 2 cups warm tap water (≈ 100 °F)
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil or canola oil
  • 1012 drops assorted gel food coloring (red, blue, yellow, green)
  • 1 small heat-safe bowl
  • 1 fork or mini whisk
  • Optional: 1/4 tsp silver or gold edible luster dust for sparkling trails
  • Paper towels to protect surfaces

Instructions

  1. Start by filling the glass jar or vase two-thirds full with warm tap water. This creates a dramatic effect as the colors descend.
  2. Set the jar aside on a table that is covered with paper towels to protect the surface from spills.
  3. In the small heat-safe bowl, combine the vegetable oil and drops of food coloring. If you’re using the luster dust for extra shimmer, whisk it into the oil and color mixture at this stage.
  4. Gently pour the oil and food coloring mixture over the surface of the warm water in the jar. The oil will float on top due to its lower density compared to water.
  5. Wait for about 10 to 15 seconds. You’ll start to see the colors piercing through the oil, sinking, and blooming into beautiful underwater fireworks.
  6. For best visual effects, consider filming the sequence up close for amazing ASMR visuals.
  7. After the colors have dispersed and the show is over, you can lightly swirl the jar to mix the colors into a pastel sea. Alternatively, dump out the contents and reload the jar for an encore performance.

Notes

  • Experiment with different color combinations to create unique visual effects.
  • You can also try using flavored oils like lemon or garlic oil for a different sensory experience if planning to use the jar in another context.
