- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
- 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for buttercream)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice (for buttercream)
- 1 tablespoon grated orange zest (for buttercream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for buttercream)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract, orange juice, and zest.
- Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
- Make the buttercream while the cakes cool; beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and mix in orange juice, zest, and vanilla.
- Assemble the cake by spreading buttercream between the cooled layers and on top.
- Decorate with additional orange zest before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. For a richer frosting option, consider adding cream cheese.
